Suiteki

At the invitation of the Goethe-Institut Osaka Kyoto, the Frankfurt designer Kai Linke has initiated the "Suiteki" project together with the Urushi master Takahiko Sato from Kyoto as part of Expo 2025 with the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives" in Osaka.

The "Suiteki" project unfolds a fascinating synthesis of tradition and innovation as well as a commitment to a sustainable future by combining the millennia-old lacquer technique of Urushi with contemporary design. When an Urushi drop, obtained from the sap of the Urushi tree, hardens on a surface, it appears like a solidified drop of water. This organic shape reveals the unique aesthetics and atmosphere of Urushi products with their special reflection, depth effect and lustre.

Client:

A drop of water in Japanese "Suiteki" is a symbol of life and moisture in the German and Japanese languages. There are numerous proverbs in both languages.  "Constant dripping brings the stone", in Japanese "Amadare isho o ugatsu." refers, for example, to the fact that seemingly small efforts can lead to success if they are undertaken persistently enough. The proverb also reminds Kai Linke of the elaborate and long-lasting Urushi surface finishes of the "Suiteki" objects, which resemble solidified drops of Urushi lacquer and emphasise their precision craftsmanship. The objects were milled from paulownia wood in Germany and lacquered in Japan by Urushi master Takahiko Sato in a process lasting several months and involving dozens of layers.

Suiteki

Around the world, the symbol of water droplets stands for life and moisture. Nowadays, the symbol is becoming increasingly important in view of global water scarcity and environmental pollution, as well as the need to use water carefully. Both Japan and Germany have been hit by extreme weather conditions such as heatwaves, droughts and low water levels in recent years.

The project will be presented to the public as part of Expo 2025 in Osaka and honours the collaboration between cultures, crafts and design. The "Suiteki" objects create an awareness of the responsible use of water as a resource.
